Ankara University Department of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2014 by the 2012 decision of with the decision of Council of Higher Education (YÖK). A four year undergraduate program in English with one Professor, one Associate Professor, three Assistant Professors and one Research Assistant was approved by YÖK in 2015. In the 2019-2020 academic year, the program faculty has consisted of two Professors, one Associate Professor, two Assistant Professors and four Research Assistants.

In 2015, the classrooms, offices and laboratories of K Building on Gölbaşı Campus were renovated according to the educational and research needs of the Department. The undergraduate program was started in 2015-2016 academic year. The official building opening took place in April 29th, 2016 by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş.

In 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, 69 (7 foreign), 49 (8 foreign), 59 (6 foreign), 77 (25 foreign) and 73 (11 foreign)  students were registered to the Department, respectively. Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering  Program in English was approved by YÖK in 2017.

Starting from 2015, undergraduate laboratories have been established by the infrastructure funds from the University and research laboratories have been established by the same fund together with various other national and international funds. Since 2017, the research laboratories in the Department have consisted of: Biofluids Laboratory, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Laboratory, Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Laboratory, Proteomics and Metabolomics Laboratory and Medical Image Processing and Data Mining Laboratory.
